Good afternoon, teachers!First of all, thank you for getting together for my lesson presentation.I choose the warming up and speaking in Unit 11 as my topic. The time needed in class is one period.During the time the students get three aims to fulfill:they will get to know the differences among the music of the world, get to improve their speaking ability by making dialogues, and at the same time to improve their cooperative ability by making dialogues. The way in which I approach my teaching aims is Task-based Teaching Method. And during the class I will need Multi-media set, some pictures which I collect before the class. My teaching procedures include five steps:Lead-in,Warming up,Speaking,Exercise and Homework. Now allow me more time to explain each of them in detail.
The first step is Lead in.5 minutes is needed.I will greet the students and lead the topic of this unit by asking the students to listen a piece of light music. Then I will ask them two questions.Question No.1:How many musical styles do you know?Question No.2:What musical instrument is your favorite?I will give the students some hints or show them pictures so that it is not difficult for them to answer. Then I will start the new unit “THE SOUNDS OF THE WORLD”and tell them to turn to P71.
The second step is Warming up.10 minutes is needed. For this part I will play four pieces of music from different countries for the students to listen to.Then ask them to decide where they come from and what are the characteristics of each of them.During the music being played I will write down on the blackboard the following words:romantic, springy, soft, and aboriginal. These words may help them answer my questions well.
The first two steps are designed to get the students to know the differences among the music of the world and the characteristics of some music.
The third step is Speaking.10 minutes is needed.During this the time the students will get to learn ways of making suggestions.First, give the students a situation:I have a friend named Chen Yanmei who loves light music very much.Tomorrow is her birthday.I want to buy a CD as her birthday present, but I can’t decide which CD I should choose for her. Then get the students to give advice.Allow them a few seconds. Then turn to the example in Speaking.Get the students to read the dialogue aloud and act it out in pairs.I will ask two pairs of them to come to the front and do the showing.
The fourth step is Exercise.10 minutes is needed. After the showing I will ask the students to look at the situations provided in the text book.Have them work in pairs and choose one to make a dialogue.Tell them to make full use of the expressions on P73.I will give them a few minutes to work together then ask another two pairs to act their dialogues out. After they finish I will make comments on their acting. As with this part I have an optional task for high level students to do.The students may try to value his/ her and others’ working by give marks.I may show them the assessment criteria ( fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, creativity)。 For each criteria the full mark is 2 points. The total mark is 10 points. And there are extra points to get if they can find mistakes from others. One mistake found, they will get 0.1 point. To get the students be familiar with the expressions of making suggestions and use them in their study I will show them a dialogue with blanks to fill in with provided sentences.
Time will be given for them to do the exercise. When they finish it,I will correct the answers with the whole class. Then time will come to the fifth step when I will tell them what they have to do after class, that is Homework they got to do.I will ask the students to do the following two things:one thing is to learn to sing their favorite English songs; the other is to pre-review Reading Part.
Above all is the ways I use to approach the Warming up and Speaking Parts in Unit.As the saying goes:“Every road leads to Rome.”Teachers may approach the same teaching materials from different angles.I would like to listen to your teaching ways in order that I will make progress in my teaching.Thank you!
