Around the world young people are spending unbelievable sums of money to listen to rock music. Forbes magazine reports that at least fifty rock stars have incomes between two million and six million dollars per year.
''It doesn''t make sense, '' says Johnny Mathis, one of the older music millionaires, who made a million dollars a year when he was popular in the 1950s. “Performers aren''t worth this kind of money. In fact, nobody is.''
But the rock stars admirers seem to disagree. Those who love rock music spend about two billion dollars a year for records. They pay 150 million to see rock stars in person.
Luck is a key word for explaining the success of many. In 1972 one of the luckiest was Kon Mclean, who wrote and sang ''American Pie''. Mclean writes his own music, so he earns an additional two cents on every single record on the song.
Neil Young who performs in torn blue jeans, sometimes sings to an audience of 10,000, each of whom has paid five dollars for a ticket. After paying expenses, Young leaves with about $18,000 in his blue jeans at the end of an evening.
How do the rock stars use their money? What do they do when the money starts pouring in like water? Most of the young stars simply show the money around. England''s Elton John gave someone a $38,000 Rolls Royce car and brought himself 5,000 pairs of eyeglasses, then lighted up and spelt E-L-T-O-N. He also bought himself two cars, ''one for each foot.''
Many rock stars live like Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. Those performers return from a tour, pay their bills, and buy new toys. Then when they need money again, they do another tour. They save no money and live from hand to mouth.
In the end the rock star''s life is unrewarding. After two or three years riches and fame are gone. Left with his memories and his tax problems, the lonely ex-performer spends his remaining years trying to attract strangers. New stars have arrived to take his place.
56. This passage is mainly about __________.
A. the success of a rock star
B. the way rock stars live
C. the success of rich rock stars
D. the admirers of rock stars
57. What makes most of the rock stars successful in making money?
A. Luck B. A wonderful performance
C. Their own music D. Their ability
58. How much expenses does Neil Young pay for a performance?
A. $10,000 B. $18,000
C. $32,000 D. $38,000
59. When we say the rock stars live from hand to mouth, we mean ________.
A. they have to earn money by hand
B. they steal when they need money
C. they earn money only for their immediate enjoyment
D. they know how to spend money in a reasonable way

Last Monday, David Nicol, Australia''s top kidney(肾)doctor, successfully removed a diseased kidney from a woman. What''s so unusual about that? David Nicol was in his office in Australia while the woman lay on an operating table in New Zealand.
What connected them was a technology called remote surgery(远程手术)。
Remote surgery itself is not new. In 2001, a group of doctors in New York, US, removed a gall bladder(胆囊)from a patient lying in France. It was the first successful case of remote surgery used on a human across international borders(国界)。
Now, Nicol''s operation is to be the first one performed on the kidneys. Nicol used joysticks(操纵杆)to direct robotic arms in the New Zealand operating room during the two-hour operation. The joysticks and the robotic arms are linked by a computer network. Nicol could watch the robot''s work while doctors in New Zealand checked the patient and changed the instruments as needed. ''Before this technology, I would have been in the operating theatre(手术室)when they were performing the operation, “ Nicol said. During remote surgery, the doctor is the one in control. The robots carry out the operation using a complex method.
Doctors have found that a robot is better than a human surgeon(外科医生)at carrying out this difficult operation—even when it is controlled thousands of miles away. Unlike humans, robotic ''arms'' do not shake when they target a small piece of tissue(组织)or organ. In remote surgery such as the removal of kidney stones, the robotic arm inserts a long special needle into the patient''s body and X-rays guide it to the kidney.
Once the robotic arm has reached the hard kidney stone, the needle gets wider so that a tiny telescope can travel down it and look at the organ. Then instruments are used to break up the stone and get rid of the remaining waste.
For doctors, the technology means less stress(紧张)in the operation room. And for patients, it means far less chance of suffering blood loss or damage to a nearby organ.
However, the remote surgery is not widely used because it''s still very expensive. A remote operation on a gall bladder costs more than US $1 million. A normal operation only costs US $2,000. It will be some time yet before the price falls and the operation is available(可利用的)to people throughout the world.
63. Why was this kidney operation so unusual? Because __________.
A. remote surgery was only used on the kidney operation
B. it was a robot that was carrying out the operation
C. the patient and the doctor doing the operation were in different countries
D. it was a successful operation performed on kidneys
64. Who or what was in charge of this kidney operation?
A. David Nicol B. The robot
C. Joysticks D. The computer network
65. Nicol''s words mainly show that ___________.
A. he is fond of the theatre
B. he used to relax himself in a special way before operation
C. remote surgery has saved him much time
D. remote surgery has brought a revolution in medicine
66. The writer _________ remote surgery in the passage.
A. is against B. is for
C. has doubts about D. is objective(客观的)about
67. What does ''target'' mean in paragraph 5?
A. Aim at B. Cure
C. Meet with D. Get close to
D
Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and what he wants them to learn from him.
What visual(视觉的)artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion(运动)and at rest; their choices show that these aspects(方面)of the world are worth looking at, and that they contain beautiful sights. Modern artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, and that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a decaying(腐烂)leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing out attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, explaining something—all of which means that he is trying to teach us.
68. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. An artist wants to show something meaningful
B. An artist hopes that the public will understand and learn from him
C. An artist asks the public to believe what he says in his work
D. An artist intends to present something that has not been said before
69. It is hard to explain what a painter is saying, because _______.
A. a painter uses unusual words and phrases
B. a painter uses shapes and colors instead o words
C. most painters do not express themselves well
D. many painters do not say anything
70. Modern artists might say their choice of subject ________.
A. only provides interesting patterns
B. carries a message to the public
C. has no pattern or form
D. teaches the public important truths
71. From the author''s point of view, modern art contains ________.
A. nothing but meaningless patterns
B. completely meaningless subjects
C. subjects chosen partly for their meaning
D. uninteresting aspects of the world

The Norwegian(挪威的)government is doing its best to deep the oil industry under control. A new law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline; production limits have been raised; and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But the oil industry has a way of getting over such problems, and few people believe that the government will be able to hold things back for long. As one Norwegian politician said last week, ''We will soon be changed beyond all recognition.''
Ever since the war, the government has been carrying out a programme of development in the area north of the Arctic(北极)Circle. During the past few years this programme has had a great deal of success: Tromso has been built up into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and a healthy industry. But the oil industry has already started to draw people south, and within a few years the whole northern policy(政策)could be in ruins.
The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the north, however. With nearly 100 percent employment, everyone can see a situation by developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose most of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad.
The real argument over oil is its threat(威胁)to the Norwegian way of life. Farmers and fishermen do not make up most of the population, but they are an important part of it because Norwegians see in them many of the qualities that they regard with pride as essentially Norwegian. And it is the farmers and fishermen who are most critical(批评的)of the oil industry because of the damage that it might cause to the countryside and to the sea.
72. According to the new law, in ''an area south of the southern end of the long coastline'', _________.
A. oil exploration is allowed
B. oil exploration is forbidden
C. only a limited amount oil production is allowed
D. none of above
73. Which of the following is mentioned by the author in the passage?
A. People began to come to the north because of oil industry
B. Oil industry would ruin the north
C. Oil industry drove people to the south
D. Oil industry drew southern people to the north
74. All of the following is the effect of the oil industry EXCEPT __________.
A. the service industry will become smaller
B. some smaller industries may disappear
C. some tourists will be employed in oil industry
D. some employees in tourism will work in oil industry
75. Why are farmers and fishermen critical of the oil industry?
A. The oil industry has made the southern people move north
B. The oil industry has taken away workers from other small businesses
C. The oil production in the north reduced to a low level.
D. The traditional(传统的)Norwegian way of life is being damaged

M: What sort of clothes does he wear?
W: A dark suit, a white shirt, a tie. Why?
M: Perhaps that had something to do with it.
W: You mean, you think I didn''t get the job because I come to work in jeans and a sweater?
M: It''s possible, isn''t it?
W: Do you really think I should wear different clothes?
M: Well … Perhaps you should think about it.
W: Why should I wear a skirt? Or a dress?
M: I''m not saying you should. I''m saying you should think about it. That''s all.
W: Why should I do that? I''m good at my job! That''s the only important thing!

W: Oh, hi, Dave, Long time no see!
M: Hi, Maria. I was in the neighborhood, so I thought I''d drop by.
W: Come on in, would you like anything to drink? I have Sprite or orange juice.
M: Sprite would be fine.
W: Uh, so how have you been?
M: Oh, I''m doing Okay. But school has been really hectic these days, and I haven''t had time to relax.
W: By the way, what''s your major anyway?
M: Hotel Management.
W: Well, what do you want to do once you graduate?
M: Uh … I haven''t decided for sure, but I think I''d like to work for a hotel or travel agency in this area. How about you?
W: Well, when I first started college, I wanted to major in French, but I realized I might have a hard time finding a job using the language, so I changed my major to computer science. With the right skills, landing a job in computer industry shouldn''t be difficult.
M: So, do you have a part-time job to support yourself through school?
W: Well, fortunately for me, I received a four-year academic scholarship that pays for all of my tuition and books.
M: Wow, that''s great.

More than 100,000 law students graduate from law schools in the United States each year. A small number of men and women study at top law schools at such famous universities as Harvard, Yale and Stanford. Most students, however, learn the law at less well-known universities all around the country.
Law students in America generally attend law schools 9 months each year, for 3 years. But some attend law schools at night, after work. Completing law studies at night takes about 4 years.
Although most law students are in their middle 20s, a growing number of older people are studying law. There are many law students in their 30s and 40s. Some enter law schools even later in life.
One of the biggest changes in law schools in recent years has been the growing number of women students. About 40% of law students today are women. In 1970, only about 9% were women.
