With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having 37 dealing with my part—time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about 38 both acting and San Francisco. City life had 39 too much for me.

As I walked down 40 streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began 41 both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers(抢劫犯)。 Very few people were still out 42 a few sad—looking homeless people under blankets.

It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn''t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some 54 of city life. I realized that the city couldn''t be a bad place as long as people were willing to 55 each other.

London Thursday July 26 (Reuters)—Ian Johnstone missed his girlfriend so much that he flew back to Britain from Australia to propose to her. The problem is that she flew in the opposite direction.

He and Amy Dolby even managed to meet each other when they sat in the same airport waiting—room in Singapore at the same time to wait for connecting flights.

Dolby, heartbroken when she arrived at Johnstone''s Sydney apartment to find he had flown to London, told the Times: ''It was as though someone was playing a cruel joke on us. He is the most romantic person I have ever known. I think our problem is that we are both quite impulsive(冲动的)people. We are always trying to surprise each other.''

After an 11,000—mile flight across the globe, she was greeted by Johnstone''s astonished flat mate asking what she was doing there.

''The terrible truth dawned when I found that Ian''s suitcase and most of his clothes were missing. I sat on the end of his bed and cried my eyes out. And that really made me angry,'' she said.

Johnstone, a 27—year—old bricklayer, had taken a year off to travel round Australia. But he was missing Dolby, a 26—year—old secretary, so much he got a job on a Sydney building site and started saving for a surprise.

He then flew home to Britain and went to her apartment armed with an engagement ring, champagne and flowers.

''I really missed Amy and I''d been thinking about her all the time. I thought she was winding me up when she phoned me from Australia,'' he said.

Johnstone then asked Dolby to marry him on the phone. ''I didn''t know whether to laugh or cry but I accepted,'' she said.

In most non—Muslim and non—Buddhist countries, drinking alcohol has been part of a traditional way of life for many hundreds of years.

Although America is a fairly young country, it too has had a long tradition of alcohol drinking. Many of the early immigrants to America were Europeans, who traditionally drank beer, whisky, or wine.

So it must have come as a shock to many Americans when, at the start of the 19th century, a group called the ''prohibitionists(禁酒主义者)'' began fighting for a law to ban the drinking of alcohol. The prohibitionists believed that alcohol had a bad effect on society and was a threat to law and order.

This was partly true in the cities where most people were very poor. Living conditions were terrible and many people, mainly men, turned to alcohol to try to forget their problems. After years of fighting by the prohibitionists, the Prohibition Act was passed in 1920. It meant that it was illegal to make or sell any alcoholic drink.

The effect of the new law was not what had been intended. Liquor was now the one thing on everyone''s mind. Now that it was illegal it became more attractive, in the same way that some drugs are popular today. Many bars reopened as ''speakeasies'', secret rooms where drinking and gambling(赌博)carried on night and day.

As well as failing to stop people drinking, prohibition actually created a whole new kind of criminal(犯罪的)activity. The speakeasies were supplied with illegal drink by underworld dealers. The dealers were often protected by corrupt(腐败的)police and officials.

Before long, organized crime, like the Mafia, was involved in making, supplying, and selling alcohol. It was this kind of business that created powerful gangsters(歹徒)like Al Capone.

By the late 1920s there were more speakeasies than there had been bars. Many people who never drank before, especially women, now went to speakeasies as it became fashionable.

Prohibition finally ended in 1933 because everyone agreed that it had failed. Drinking had actually increased.

Today, prohibition is often blamed for the widespread existence of organized crime and corrupt officials. The general feeling of mistrust towards the law, which is still found in America today, can be traced back to the days of prohibition.

  63. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

  A. Both drugs and alcohol were forbidden in 1920.

  B. Women liked alcohol better than men in 1930.

  C. The Prohibition Act against Alcohol lasted 13 years.

  D. All the Americans agree that alcohol is badly needed in America.

  64. We can learn from the article that at the start of the 19th century __________.

  A. all the bars in America opened secret rooms

  B. most poor people stopped selling and drinking alcohol

  C. drinking alcohol became so popular that even children went to bars

  D. the prohibitionists wanted to solve the social problems caused by alcohol drinking

  65. According to the Prohibition Act _________.

  A. no alcoholic drink was allowed to make or sell in America

  B. alcohol dealers had to buy alcoholic drink from the officials

  C. police were able to make and sell alcoholic drink in their state

  D. drinking alcohol would create a new kind of criminal activity

  66. It can be inferred in the article that ____________.

  A. the tradition of a nation and injustice could ruin a law

  B. drugs and alcohol become more popular in America now

  C. alcohol dealers encouraged poor people to drink alcohol

  D. corrupt police and officials organized some criminal activities

  D

Getting and giving advice can often be a tricky business because you never really know anyone unless you walk a mile in their shoes. Having said that, I love getting advice because it is a caring, intimate experience and I always listen openly before deciding if the other person''s viewpoint works for me.

There are two superb pieces of guidance that I have been given over the years that have stuck with me and really made a difference to my life. About four years ago, I did a course with the Landmark Forum, which was a lifechanging workshop that taught me how to let to (give up) of the past and get on with the now. At that point in my life, I was confused about what I wanted to do career—wise and my favourite teacher said: ''Find something you really love to do.'' It was as if a light bulb illuminated (make a light shine on) my head. This sounded good to me. If I loved what I was doing it wouldn''t feel like work at all, instead it would be like play, a joy, and to get paid to play—I''m in. Of course, this advice doesn''t only apply to me. Whether you are 20 or 80, it is never too early or too late to make every day interesting and inspiring. Just begin anywhere and your path will become clear.

The second most profound piece of advice I have paid attention to came from my beloved selfhelp books. In all the books I have read, there is one great lesson: ''love yourself''. For a long time I would be my own worst critic(评论家),forever holding myself up to completely unrealistic goals of perfection. And when I fell short—ugh! I would be cruel to myself, sending terrible messages to my body, which led to nothing but pessimism(悲观情绪)and misery. Then I had another inspiring lightbulb moment. If I don''t love myself, I can''t love anyone else truly, because we are all one. We are all struggling with our own demon(劣性),seeking love and acceptance. If we love and approve of ourselves, we can love and approve of everyone else easily and respect their opinions and uniqueness as we respect our own. When I began to change my negative thought patterns to positive ones, things began to shift. I forgave myself for being so critical, and in forgiving I let go of the need to be ''perfect''. I felt like a kid again, finding wonder in everything.

Now this process did not happen overnight. It is continuous and will be for the rest of my journey. Every day, I have to wake up and love myself, not in an arrogant(傲慢)way, but in an accepting, caring way. Give it a try: affirm yourself. There is no one like you, you are special. Love your body, whatever shape or size, and be amazed and grateful for how it works. We are amazing beings.

  67. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 means that ''__________''

  A. you would like to walk by wearing their shoes

  B. you won''t walk more than a mile

  C. you should be in their situation

  D. you have to try your luck

  68. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

  A. A piece of advice has changed his life completely.

  B. It is good for everyone to find faults with oneself all the time.

  C. People should choose whatever they like to do to be their career.

  D. It''s harmful to send terrible messages to one''s body by being scolded.

  69. The author would probably agree that ________.

  A. everyone ought to learn to love oneself

  B. the old need more care and love than the young

  C. parents always expect too much of their children

  D. people should get more paid from joy than work

  70. It can be inferred that the author _________.

  A. feels worried about himself and everyone around him

  B. is physically strong and mentally weak

  C. loves himself and enjoys life

  D. is selfish and unfriendly

For years, doctors advised their patients that the only thing taking multivitamins(复合维生素)does is to give them expensive urine(尿)。 After all, true vitamin deficiencies (shortage) are practically unheard of in industrialized countries. Now it seems those doctors may have been wrong. The results of a growing number of studies suggest that even a modest vitamin shortfall can be harmful to your health. Although proof of the benefits of multivitamins is still far from certain, the few dollars you spend on them is probably a good investment(投资)。

Or at least that''s the argument put forward in the New England Journal of Medicine. Ideally, say Dr. Walter Willett and Dr. Meir Stampfer of Harvard, all vitamin supplements would be evaluated in scientifically rigorous clinical trials (testing period)。 But those studies can take a long time and often raise more questions than they answer. At some point, while researchers work on figuring out where the truth lies, it just makes sense to say the potential(潜在的)benefit outweighs the cost.

The best evidence to date concerns folate, one of the Bvitamins. It''s been proved to limit the number of defects in embryos(胚胎), and a recent test found that folate in combination with vitamin B12 and a form of B6 also decreases the re—blockage of arteries(动脉)after surgical repair.

The news on vitamin E has been more mixed. Healthy folks who take 400 international units daily for at least two years appear somewhat less likely to develop heart disease. But when doctors give vitamin E to patients who already have heart disease, the vitamin doesn''t seem to help. It may turn out that vitamin E plays a role in prevention but cannot undo serious damage.

Despite vitamin C''s great popularity, consuming large amounts(数量)of it still has not been positively linked to any great benefit. The body quickly absorbs(吸收)C and simply excretes(排泄)any excess.

The multivitamins question boils down to this: Do you need to wait until all the evidence is in before you take them, or are you willing to accept that there''s enough evidence that they don''t hurt and could help?

If the latter there''s no need to go to extremes and buy the biggest horse pills or the most expensive bottles. Large doses(剂量)can cause trouble, including excessive (extreme) bleeding and nervous system problems.

Multivitamins are no substitute for exercise and a balanced diet, of course. As long as you understand that any potential benefit is modest(适度的)and subject to further refinement, taking a daily multivitamin makes a lot of sense.

  71. At one time doctors discouraged taking multivitamins because they believed that multivitamins ________.

  A. were too expensive for daily consumption

  B. were potentially harmful to people''s health

  C. could not easily be absorbed by the human body

  D. could not provide any cure for vitamin deficiencies

  72. According to the author, clinical trials of vitamin supplements ___________.

  A. often result in misleading conclusions

  B. take time and will not produce conclusive results

  C. appear to be a pure waste of time and resources

  D. should be couducted by scientists in some other ways

  73. It has been found that vitamin E ______________.

  A. can effectively help cure heart disease

  B. should be taken by patients regularly and directly

  C. has a preventive but not curative effect on heart disease

  D. should be given to patients with heart disease as early as possible

  74. It can be seen that large doses of multivitamins __________.

  A. may cause serious side effects

  B. may help prevent excessive bleeding

  C. are likely to incease the blockage of arteries

  D. are advisable for those with vitamin deficiencies

  75. The author concludes the passage with the advice that __________.

  A. people benefit more from daily multivitamins that a balanced diet

  B. people should expect multivitamins to be used to cure diseases

  C. it''s risky to take multivitamins without listening to the doctors

  D. it''s reasonable to take a proper amount of multivitamins daily

Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble because they''re almost the same age, they can talk with, communicate with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles as they have rich experiences and love them very much. The teachers and parents can be trusted by them. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can”t get on well with other people, either. They have few friends.

In my opinion, when in trouble we''d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help.

  Yours Sincerely,

  Li Ping (108)

  第二小题:开放作文(15分)

  Possible version:

I think there are several ways to find the owner. First, Wang Dong could open the purse and see if there is her ID card or name card in it. If there is he may phone her or send the purse to her according to the address printed on either card. Second, he may go to ask the Lost and Found for help. If I were he I would ask the police for help. (74 words)

  M: Who''s this?

W: What? Oh, the music. It''s the Peter Jones band.

  M: Who''s playing the piano?

W: Hi, Jeff. I have been looking for you. Do you think you could help me buy a car?

M: Sure, what kind of car do you want, Lisa?

  W: ANISSAN.

M: Can you pay of it?

W: Yea. I have enough money.

  M: How much is enough?

W: The most I could spend is $2,000.

M: You''ll never get a new car for that. A used car is your only hope.

W: A used car is OK, if everything goes well.

M: I just heard about something you might want to know. My grandma lives next door to an old woman. She just mentioned that her eyesight is so bad that she had to give up her driver''s license. That means she can''t drive any more.

W: Is her car very good? How much do you think she wants?

M: It''s really very good, only 43,000 miles on it and most of those come from her driving down to New York each winter, but I don''t'' know the price yet.

M: Well, I will be back on the twenty-ninth. Oh, and I''d like the cheapest flight available.

W: Okay. Let me see. Well, you can get a half-price ticket if you return the day before.

M: Woo. That will be on July 28. Let''s go with the cheaper flight. By the way, how much is it?

  W: It''s only $980.

M: All right. Well, let''s go with that.

M: A 51-year-old American lady is called ''Farmer Environmentalist'' by people in her state. For years, she has been trying to protect the environment. She was born in a farmer''s family in Washington State and began selling batteries in 1992. Today, she is here to talk about her battery battle. Welcome to our program, Mrs. Downing. First of all, could you please tell us what gave you the idea to collect used batteries to protect the environment?

W: Yes. One day in 1993 my son told me that used batteries could greatly harm the environment. He asked me not to throw used batteries away.

M: I know you spent US $10,000 in setting up a factory to recycle used batteries in 1999.

W: Yes. In 2004, I also invested in a website www.greenearth.org to help more people to understand the importance of environmental protection.

M: And you were honored with the Greenest Award by the Green Foundation last April for that. This May, you won another award from the Ford Foundation.

  W: Yes, that''s right.

M: ''Now, I work at home and I work on a computer, so I spend all day in front of a screen. And then to relax I will often move into the other room, and approach another screen. But with one, I sit right before it, close enough to touch it; and with the other I sit across the room and I address it with a remote control. Now, these two screens have the same images and they will increasingly share information. Already I find many of my social relation… the way I talk to people is very electronic: it takes place through networks; it takes place through telephones, through fax machines; eventually I will be seeing them on the television, and it will be difficult for me to tell work from play, and work from parties.''
